Abstract
Marriage remains a cherished aspiration for many, yet in Claket Village, Pacet Subdistrict, Mojokerto Regency, it involves adherence to longstanding traditions, including the calculation of weton. This astrological practice assesses compatibility based on the couple’s birth days to predict potential bad fortune in their married life. Despite its cultural significance, weton often leads to negative impacts such as marriage postponement or cancellation, psychological distress, and familial discord stemming from incompatibility. Younger generations frequently perceive the practice as unfair, highlighting tensions between traditional values and modern human rights principles. The strict application of weton calculations challenges fundamental rights, including the freedom to choose a partner, non-discrimination, and human dignity. This study employs empirical field research with a qualitative approach to explore the effects of weton on marriage practices in Claket Village. Findings reveal numerous cases where weton incompatibility resulted in marriage rejection or delay, causing emotional and social strain for couples and families. This research underscores the need to balance cultural traditions with respect for individual rights, fostering a harmonious coexistence of heritage and contemporary values.
