ABSTRACT
Forced marriage remains a pressing social issue, particularly in rural areas such as Kecamatan Krucil, Kabupaten Probolinggo. This phenomenon often involves adolescent girls who are still in school being coerced by their parents to marry, driven by factors such as economic pressure, social norms, or cultural traditions. This study aims to examine the perspectives of religious leaders and the head of the local Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) on forced marriages, to identify the underlying factors influencing parental decisions, and to evaluate the role of these figures in balancing and protecting children's rights in such cases. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through structured interviews with key informants, including the KUA head and local religious leaders. The findings reveal that forced marriage contradicts both Islamic teachings and human rights principles, as it undermines the child's autonomy and right to education. Cultural and social norms in rural settings frequently push parents to marry off their children prematurely, often through unregistered (sirri) marriages, which result in significant legal and social disadvantages for the offspring. However, ongoing educational campaigns led by religious figures and the KUA have contributed to a growing awareness among parents about the detrimental effects of forced marriage, leading to a gradual decline in such practices. This study highlights the critical role of religious and legal authorities in addressing forced marriage through community education and advocacy. It recommends that these efforts be sustained and expanded, particularly in remote areas, to bridge the gap between legal frameworks and societal practices. By strengthening collaboration among government bodies, educational institutions, and religious organizations, it is possible to foster a community that upholds children's rights and ensures their access to education and personal freedom.
