Abstract

This article aims to discuss the prohibition for newlyweds to pass Mount Pegat in Lamongan which is reviewed with ‘urf. The research methodology in this article uses qualitative methods with a library research approach. The research results show that the tradition of prohibiting newlyweds from passing Mount Pegat in Lamongan is believed to protect marriages from bad luck and difficulties. Even though this prohibition is not recognized as a valid legal basis in Islam because it conflicts with sharia teachings, the values ​​contained in this tradition still play an important role in the social life of society. There are divided views among the public regarding this prohibition. One group believes that this prohibition is important to maintain marital harmony, while another group, especially the younger generation, considers it a myth with no scientific basis. The community continues to maintain this tradition as a form of respect for cultural values, which is reflected in the tradition of releasing chickens. This review also emphasizes the importance of the concept of ‘urf in Islamic law as a source of legal authority that reflects societal customs. Overall, the prohibition on passing Mount Pegat reflects the dynamics between tradition and modernity, and shows how people try to maintain harmony in their married life.
