Abstract

The phenomenon of delayed marriage among young people is becoming increasingly prevalent, including in the Wonokromo District of Surabaya. Although most of them are normatively eligible for marriage in terms of age, many still choose to postpone it. This study aims to analyze the sociological factors underlying the decision of young adults to delay marriage despite being of sufficient age. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method through interviews with youths aged 20–30 years, community leaders, and parents in the Wonokromo area. The findings indicate that the delay in marriage is not solely caused by financial constraints but is also influenced by shifting mindsets among the younger generation regarding career, education, personal freedom, and concerns about marital failure. Moreover, a cultural shift from viewing marriage as an obligation to perceiving it as a choice further reinforces the tendency to delay marriage. In conclusion, age readiness does not always align with readiness to build a household; social, economic, and psychological factors play a significant role in the decision to postpone marriage among youths in Wonokromo District, Surabaya.
